(Intern) Environmental Compliance

PAY RATE: $14.45 per hour – College Freshman or Sophomore / $16.17 per hour – College Junior or Senior / $18.80 per hour – College Graduate Studies

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Under the direction of Environmental Health and Safety Compliance Specialist this position will support environmental compliance and stormwater management initiatives across all Metroparks by conducting field inspections of stormwater infrastructure, collecting environmental samples, and assisting with chemical inventories at park facilities. The intern will utilize GIS applications, handheld GPS units, and ArcGIS to collect and manage spatial data, and update stormwater system maps. This internship provides an opportunity to analyze and summarize collected data in a comprehensive report that includes maps, tables, and a qualitative summary of findings and recommendations.

To qualify for a college internship:

  1. Students must be enrolled as a student in an accredited college or university and provide proof of enrollment upon hire.
  2. Students who are not currently enrolled in school due to summer break must provide proof of continued future enrollment (e.g. enrollment in the fall will qualify).
  3. Students must perform work that is related to their formal academic program.
  4. College interns must provide the company with all the guidelines required by their educational institution.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general direction of Environmental Health and Safety Compliance Specialist. Position works independently and exercises some judgment and discretion in completion of duties.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Conduct inspections of stormwater infrastructure and collect environmental samples as directed throughout all parks.
  • Use GIS apps or handheld GPS to collect spatial data of stormwater structures throughout all parks and utilize ArcGIS to update stormwater maps.
  • Update environmental forms and plans.
  • Conduct chemical inventories at park facilities.
  • May assist with EHS Compliance Specialist with other projects as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university with a concentration in environmental science, biology, chemistry, geology, GIS, natural resources management, or a related field.
  • Must maintain a valid Michigan driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to perform essential duties.

TOOLS AND EQUIMENT USED: Personal computer, including word processing, mapping, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software applications; calculator, phone, copy machine, GPS unit.

Employee generally performs work within an office environment.  The noise level is usually quiet.   Occasionally, the employee will be required to work in outdoor environments and will be subject to weather conditions to include heat, rain, and snow.
