SALARY RANGE: $64,633 - $84,853 annually DOQ

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Under the supervision of the Supervising Interpreter/Farm Center, work activities in this position primarily involve assisting in the daily operation of the Farm by planning and presenting interpretive programs, caring for and maintaining farm livestock and crops, promoting public interest and appreciation for the farm, and recommending improvements in the farm program. Creativity, initiative, enthusiasm, positive demeanor, confidentiality, and reliability are crucial to the success of this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: The list below is intended to describe the general nature of duties only. Employees shall perform other duties as assigned.

  • Develop, coordinate, enhance and conduct diversified interpretive programs including live exhibits, guided talks, demonstrations, field trips, special events and outreach.
  • Perform farm maintenance duties.
  • Responsible for the health and welfare of the farm livestock.
  • Examine animals to detect diseases and injuries.
  • Prepare animals for and assist in the delivery of offspring.
  • Groom, clip and trim animals for exhibition.
  • Maintain records of animal care, health and birthing.
  • Provide and prepare timely and accurate correspondence, records and reports.
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets including request and purchases of supplies of necessary equipment.
  • Seeks out and works with volunteers to assist with interpretive activities and office support in coordination with the Volunteer Services Coordinator.
  • Work as a teamster.
  • Promote public interest in the farm program through various activities and publicity.


  • May serve on committees.
  • May assist with special events.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - Interpreter/Farm & Animal Care – Level 06

  • Bachelor’s degree with specialization in agriculture, animal husbandry, veterinary science, life sciences or related field. Master’s degree preferred. Applicants with 8 or more years of related service will be given credit toward meeting the minimum educational requirements and will be considered for the position.
  • Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) certification, or the ability to complete CIG certification within one year of employment and maintain certification.
  • Must maintain a valid Michigan driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement the principles and practices used in farm animal health care and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of and ability to identify farm animal diseases and injuries.
  • Knowledge of the principles of sustainable farm management.
  • Knowledge of farm maintenance duties.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices used in developing and carrying out a diversified interpretive program.
  • Knowledge of and ability to design agriculture education programs that support the specific grade level content expectations and Michigan Science Standards set by the Michigan Department of Education.
  • Ability to operate trucks, tractors and heavy farm equipment.
  • Ability to traverse sandy, marshy or wooded areas with even or uneven terrain.
  • Ability to load, transport and unload materials/livestock.
  • Ability to work as a teamster.
  • Ability to communicate verbally, and lead programs, tours and presentations.
  • Ability to traverse wetlands and various upland terrain to conduct programs.
  • Ability to use carpenter and artistic tools.
  • Ability to demonstrate creativity and the ability to implement new initiatives.
  • Ability to promote and maintain cooperative working relationships with educational groups, park visitors and other employees.
  • May be assigned to work in other parks and districts as needed and if necessary.
  • May be required to adjust schedule to meet organizational needs, including special events, evenings, weekends & holidays.
  • Ability to perform essential duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - Interpreter/Farm & Animal Care – Level 08

  • Meets all of the minimum qualifications of Interpreter/Farm & Animal Care – Level 06.
  • Ten years of related experience for level 08.
