GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Under the direction of District Interpretive Services Supervisor or the Farm Center Interpretive Supervisor, this position will observe, help and eventually present public programs or portions of programs, learn front line registrations and speaking with visitors. This position may learn best practices in animal care, trail work, gardening and invasive species removal depending on location. This position performs a variety of professional and technical duties related to interpretive programs and operation of nature centers, farms, and museums for assigned district.

To qualify for a college internship:
                a. Students must be enrolled as a student in an accredited college or university and provide proof of enrollment upon hire.

                b. Students who are not currently enrolled in school due to summer break must provide proof of continued future enrollment (e.g. enrollment in the fall will qualify).

                c. Students must perform work that is related to their formal academic program.

                d. College interns must provide the company with all the guidelines required by their educational institution.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general direction of either the District Interpretive Services Supervisor or the Farm Center Interpretive Supervisor. Position works independently and exercises some judgment and discretion in completion of duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Observe and conduct interpretive presentations to students, families, summer camps, and the general public.
Work a varied schedule, work any day of the week, including weekends and holidays, am or pm shifts, and in any type of weather.
Register groups and individuals for programs, prepare and send out correspondence, and arrange other school/group visit logistics.
Welcome and interact with casual park visitors and answer inquiries in person and via telephone, e-mail.
Maintenance of indoor facilities and outdoor spaces, including captive animal and trail maintenance, as needed.
May assist with special events.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Enrolled in a college or university with a concentration in nature interpretation, environmental education, biology or natural resources management, or a related field.
A strong commitment to interpretation, conservation, and the environment.
Must maintain a valid Michigan driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
May be required to adjust schedule to meet organizational needs, including special events, evenings, weekends & holidays.
Ability to perform essential duties.

TOOLS AND EQUIMENT USED: Personal computer, including word processing, mapping, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software applications; calculator, phone, fax machine, copy machine, GPS unit.

Employee generally performs work within an office environment. The noise level is usually quiet.   Occasionally, the employee will be required to work in outdoor environments and will be subject to weather conditions to include heat, rain, and snow.
