Natural Resources Technician (Part Time) - Administrative Office

 

 

LOCATION: Administrative Office

BU / LEVEL: P3 - P5 Provisional

SALARY RANGE: $11.55 - $16.40 per hour/DOQ  

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:   Under the supervision of the Natural Resources & Environmental Compliance Manager, the Natural Resources Technician will perform a wide range of tasks in the field of natural resources and assist in the implementation of the Metroparks Natural Resources Management Plan.  Working individually, or in conjunction with other Natural Resources Department employees, administrative staff, park staff and volunteers, the technician will assist with natural resource planning and mapping, biological inventories, invasive plant control, prescribed burning, or related tasks as apparent or assigned.  The technician will also assist with the coordination and implementation of natural resource volunteer workdays and other stewardship events and activities as required. This position is part-time up to 1500 hours per year. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates should possess or be working towards a degree in natural resource management, biology, ecology, environmental science, forestry, or related field.
Experience in ecological restoration and management and the planning of such activities; or any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to demonstrate ability to perform the job.
Previous fieldwork experience in the Great Lakes region is preferred.
Strong working knowledge of computer systems.
Ability to operate essential tools and equipment.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 
Ability to establish and maintain effective, respectful and productive working relationships with department staff, citizen advisory groups, governmental officials, volunteers, community organizations, and the general public.
Will be required to work assigned Special Events, Weekends, Evenings and Holidays.
Will be required to adjust schedule to meet organizational needs.
Ability to perform essential duties.

MINIMUM SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:

Working knowledge of native and invasive flora and fauna, geology, and ecology of southern Michigan
Knowledge of mapping using GIS software and in the management of both databases and geodatabases for tracking large amounts of data.
Understanding of the ecological impacts of invasive species on native ecosystems of southern Michigan.
Knowledge of the ecological role of fire in the management of southern Michigan ecosystems, and the techniques employed to use prescribed fire in natural areas.
Knowledge of contemporary principles and practices of volunteer management and supervision.
Knowledge of relevant safety procedures, environmental compliance regulations and sustainability issues.
Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Arc GIS.
Ability to identify ecological threats to local native ecosystems and recommend appropriate best management practices to mitigate those threats.
Ability to lead, coordinate, and motivate employees and volunteers to conduct ecological stewardship activities in the field.
Ability to document and monitor those stewardship activities over time.
Ability to safely use and maintain (and train others to safely use and maintain) chain saws, brush blades, herbicide applicators, and other field equipment.
Ability to critically analyze operations, collaboratively design and institute improvements without disruption of existing operations.
Provide both oral and written communication that is easily understood and direct in its content. 

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:    Within three months of employment, must possess and maintain during employment a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certificate for the State of Michigan and S130/S190 Prescribed Burn qualifications.
