Deputy Director - Administrative Office

The Huron-Clinton Metroparks, located in Southeastern Michigan, is a five county regional parks system serving Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. The Metroparks host nearly 9 million visitors each year at 13 Metroparks covering 25,000 acres, including eight golf courses, two marinas, scenic nature trails, beaches, pools, educational activities and winter sports.

The Metroparks is seeking an experienced professional to serve as its Deputy Director. Under the direction of the Director, this position serves as chief operations officer of the Metroparks and performs a variety of professional, administrative, designated and assigned managerial duties related to daily operations of the Metroparks.

The compensation range for this position is $108,880 to $125,271 annually, and includes an excellent benefit package.


Should be an experienced leader with working knowledge of public sector and parks & recreation agencies. Must be energetic, forward-thinking and a strategic visionary with sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment and strong operational focus. Must be innovative and able to facilitate change within the organization. Should be articulate and possess excellent communication skills with the ability to establish strong working relationships with the Director, administrative staff, and employees.  Must be organized and self-directed. Must have the ability to make effective, persuasive, and understandable presentations to the Board, employees and the public on complex topics and issues.


Bachelor’s degree (required) and Master’s Degree (preferred) from an accredited college or university with specialization in parks and recreation, public administration, management, or related field.

Applicants with ten or more years of increasingly responsible management level experience in public administration, parks & recreation, management or a related field sufficient to demonstrate ability to perform the required duties. Executive leadership experience is preferred.

Broad understanding of the planning process and resource management.

Working knowledge of computer systems to include financial software, spreadsheets, data bases and word processing applications.

Working knowledge of organizational management and operations.

Working knowledge of financial management including budgeting.

Must be able to demonstrate strong leadership, creativity and have the ability to implement new initiatives.

Excellent management skills and the ability to make strategic decisions pertaining to staff, operations and procedures.

Ability to effectively delegate authority and responsibility while maintaining appropriate levels of operational accountability. 

Ability to operate listed tools and equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 

Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with the Board, Director, staff officers, stakeholders, outside agencies and employees.
