Interpreter - Wolcott Mill Metropark

LOCATION: Wolcott Mill

BARGAINING UNIT / LEVEL: Professional Level 06/08

SALARY RANGE: $53,593 - $68,980 annually DOQ  

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:   Under the supervision of the Park Operations Manager, work activities in this position primarily involve performing the daily operations of the cultural interpretive, nature interpretive or environmental education program by planning and presenting indoor and outdoor activities/programs; developing materials for educational brochures, labels and exhibits; promoting public interest in the study and appreciation of the natural environment and human impact on the environment; and preparing and presenting out-of-park cultural and educational programs.  

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – Interpreter - Level 6:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in the field of biology, earth and life sciences, environmental education or related field. (EQUIVALENCE:  Two years related experience may be substituted for each year of college.) Master’s degree preferred
Degree or equivalent experience in related field for level 6.
Must maintain a valid Michigan driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
Ability to communicate verbally, and lead programs, tours and presentations.
Ability to traverse wetlands and various upland terrain to conduct programs.
Manual dexterity to use carpenter and artistic tools.
May be assigned to work in other parks and districts as needed and if necessary.
Will be required to work assigned Special Events, Weekends and Holidays.
Ability to perform essential duties. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – Interpreter - Level 8:

Meets all of the minimum qualifications of Interpreter – Level 06.
Five years of experience for Interpreter – Level 8. 

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of the principles and practices used in developing and carrying out a nature or environmental education interpretive program for educational groups of all levels and for the general public.
Knowledge of life and physical sciences and cultural history of Michigan.
Knowledge of and ability to design science education programs that support the specific grade level content expectations set by the Michigan Department of Education.
Ability to promote and maintain cooperative working relationships with educational groups, park visitors and other employees. 

Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) certification, or the ability to complete CIG certification within one year.
